Beyond the Soil: Financing the Missing Middle of African Agriculture

Agriculture accounts for 30% of Africa’s GDP. Yet if you walk into a commercial bank, less than 5% of private-sector credit is allocated to the soil.

The farm is not the building site.

The gap

Smallholder farmers produce 80% of the continent’s food. They are supported by millions of local agri-SMEs: the aggregators, the input suppliers, the small-scale processors. But these enterprises fall into a sink hole. They are too large for the microfinance institutions that lend $500 to a micro-merchant, and too risky for the commercial banks that require 150% land collateral.

This is the missing middle. A $100 billion financing gap that starves the value chain before the crop ever reaches a factory.

The farm is not the building site.

Building the capital layer

How do you solve a risk problem without waiting for banks to change their models? You build the credit infrastructure into the workflow.

In Zimbabwe, Maminda is proving this by bundling agronomy advisory, inputs, and direct market access with embedded credit. They do not lend money in isolation. They finance the transactions.

On the institutional side, Aceli Africa is attacking the risk floor. By providing first-loss capital and origination incentives, they have unlocked over $150 million in lending to agricultural SMEs across East Africa.

“We need to make agricultural lending commercial, not charitable.”

Unlocking the soil’s yield

When you build the financing rail, you own the network. The builders who win are not buying tractors. They are structuring warehouse-receipt systems, deploying digital receivables-financing, and scaling credit-guarantee pools. They are turning agricultural risk into investable assets.

The farm is not the building site.

The value chain cannot scale on raw input alone. Until the capital layer is built, the crop remains trapped.

That is why the Business Week Afrika Summit on the 1st and 2nd of October 2026 is gathering the investors, DFI managers, and agri-fintech builders who are designing the financial rails of the future. The summit is the central hub where the builders of Africa’s agricultural balance sheet meet.
